Driving from Marrakech to the Merzouga dunes in three days is one of the best road trips in Morocco. You cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, see old kasbahs and deep gorges, and end in the sand of Erg Chebbi. Are you planning a 4x4 rental in Marrakech for this trip? Before you go: which car do you need?
Good news: the road from Marrakech to Merzouga is paved all the way. You do not need a real off-road 4x4. A comfortable SUV with good ground clearance and a big boot is enough. It also makes the long days much easier.
Our 4x4 and SUV rental fleet has SUVs, not pure off-road vehicles. For this trip, the most capable cars are the Range Rover Sport and the Porsche Cayenne, both from 280 €/day. They have strong engines for the mountain pass, soft suspension and a large boot. For a smaller budget, the Hyundai Tucson (from 60 €/day) or the Jetour T2 (from 90 €/day) are fine on the road.
Important: standard insurance usually does not cover off-road driving. Do not drive your rental car into the dunes. To visit Erg Chebbi, go with a local guide who has a real 4x4 and an experienced driver, or ride a camel.

Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n'Tichka – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate
About 200 km, 4 hours of driving without stops.
Leave early in the morning. After Marrakech, the road climbs into the High Atlas to the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at more than 2,200 metres. The road is good but has many bends. Drive slowly and watch for trucks. In winter, there can be snow and ice. Stop at the viewpoints. The views are great.
After the pass, visit the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and appears in many films. Plan one or two hours for the visit. End the day in Ouarzazate. It has many hotels, restaurants and fuel stations.
Day 2: Ouarzazate – Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga
About 350 km, 6 hours of driving without stops.
This day has the most variety. You pass the Skoura palm grove and Kelaat M'Gouna, the valley of roses. A short detour to the Dades Gorge shows strange rock shapes and a famous winding road. Later, near Tinghir, the Todra Gorge is a narrow path between very high cliffs. Park the car and walk a little.
Then drive on to Erfoud and Merzouga. Try to arrive before sunset. Leave your car in the car park of your hotel or camp. Then go to the desert camp by camel or in the camp's 4x4. A night under the stars in Erg Chebbi is the best part of the trip.
Day 3: Merzouga – Marrakech
About 550 km, 9 to 10 hours of driving via Tizi n'Tichka.
To be honest, this is a very long day. Watch the sunrise over the dunes, have breakfast and leave early. Stop often, for example in Tinghir and Ouarzazate. Change drivers if you can. Try to cross the mountain pass before dark.
If you have time, add one night in Ouarzazate or the Dades Valley on the way back. The trip then takes four days, but it is much more relaxing and safer.

Driving tips for southern Morocco
- Speed: 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on roads, 120 km/h on motorways. Police checks are common, mostly at the entrance of villages.
- Fuel: fill up in Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Erfoud. Between towns, stations are far apart.
- Do not drive at night: roads have little light, and there are animals, people and cars without lights.
- Cash: keep some dirhams for small cafes, parking and tips.
- Water and breaks: keep water in the car and stop about every two hours.
Drive yourself or take a driver?
If you drive yourself, you are free. You stop where you want and change the plan when you want. But day 3 is long, and the mountain pass needs attention.
