SUV or real off-road 4x4: what do you need for the south of Morocco?

Good news: you can reach most places in the south on asphalt roads. The Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ouarzazate, the Dades valley, Tinghir and the road to Merzouga are fine with an SUV. The higher ground clearance helps on bad parts of the road, on speed bumps and when you cross dry riverbeds.

Dirt tracks are different: the way to some desert camps, river crossings and soft sand near the dunes. There, you need all-wheel drive and experience. If your plan includes off-road driving, tell us before you book. Standard insurance does not cover driving off roads and good tracks. In the sand, we advise you to let a local guide drive. Our tips for a road trip to Merzouga and the Atlas

  • Split the trip: from Casablanca, Merzouga is a long way. Plan a stop, for example via Marrakech and Ouarzazate, or via Ifrane and Midelt.
  • Fill the tank when you can: in the south-east, there are few petrol stations between towns.
  • Do not drive at night: animals, people on foot and vehicles with poor lights make country roads more dangerous.
  • Check the weather in winter: snow and ice can close the Atlas passes for a short time.
  • Take water and keep your phone charged. There may be no phone signal on some parts of the road.
  • Do not let air out of the tyres, and do not drive into sand without the agreement of the agency and an experienced guide.

With or without a driver

If you want to enjoy the views and not think about the road, you can rent our 4x4s and SUVs with a driver, for one day or for a full tour. It is also the easiest option for a group that does not want to drive for many hours.

Documents you need

A driving licence held for at least two years, an ID card or passport, and a bank card in the driver's name for the deposit. For some top-level cars, we may ask for an older driver or a licence held for more years. We tell you this before we confirm.
