Rent a car in Tangier, the gateway to Morocco

Tangier faces Spain. For many travellers, it is the first Moroccan city they see, by ferry, by plane or by high-speed train from Casablanca. It is also a very good place to start and explore the north of the country: the cliffs of Cape Spartel, the white walls of Asilah, the medina of Tetouan, the blue streets of Chefchaouen and the Mediterranean beaches. With a rental car, you visit all these places without waiting for buses and shared taxis.

Where we deliver in Tangier

We give you the car for free everywhere in the city, for example:

  • Tangier Ibn Battouta airport, about 15 km from the centre. We meet you at the arrivals exit and we follow your flight;
  • Tanger Ville train station, the last stop of the high-speed train from Rabat and Casablanca;
  • Tanger Ville port, where the ferries from Tarifa arrive, next to the medina;
  • Tanger Med port, about fifty kilometres to the east, if you ask, and depending on the arrival time of your ferry;
  • The city centre: Boulevard Pasteur, Place de France, the Marina area;
  • Malabata and the bay, with most of the new hotels, and the Montagne area with its homes.

Driving in Tangier: what you need to know

  • Hills: the city has many hills. The streets of the medina and the Kasbah are narrow and very steep. Visit them on foot and leave the car in a car park.
  • Speed: 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on roads, 120 km/h on the motorways to Rabat and Tanger Med. There are many speed cameras on the coast road and near the airport.
  • Summer: from July to September, traffic is very heavy near the ports, because many Moroccans who live abroad come home. Plan your trips to Tanger Med early.
  • Wind: the chergui and levant winds can be strong on the Corniche and on the cape road. Hold the wheel firmly.
  • Parking: there are underground car parks near Boulevard Pasteur and the Marina, and street guards in the residential areas.
  • Tolls: you pay on parts of the A1 motorway to the south and the fast road to Tanger Med.

Trips from Tangier

  • Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules: about twenty kilometres, 25 minutes on the Corniche road;
  • Asilah: about 45 km, 40 minutes, for its white medina and its wall paintings;
  • Tetouan: about 60 km, one hour, for its medina, a World Heritage site;
  • Martil, M'diq and the Mediterranean coast: 1 h to 1 h 15;
  • Chefchaouen: about 115 km, 2 hours through the Rif mountains;
  • Larache and the old site of Lixus: about 90 km, one hour on the motorway;
  • Rabat: about 250 km, 2 h 45 on the A1.

Which category should you choose?

For the city and trips on the coast, an economy car is easy to drive and to park in steep streets. For a road trip to Chefchaouen or Rabat, a compact or saloon car gives more comfort. An SUV or 4x4 is pleasant on the mountain roads of the Rif. Families who arrive by ferry with many bags will like a minivan, and groups a minibus. Rental conditions

The driver must be at least 21 years old and have had a driving licence for at least 2 years. Drivers under 25 may pay an extra charge. The deposit is on a bank card, you return the car with the same fuel level, and delivery in Tangier is free.

Yes. Tell us the arrival port and the time of your ferry. If the boat is late, we change the time we meet you.

How long does it take from the airport to the city centre?

It takes about 20 to 25 minutes from Ibn Battouta airport to the city centre, depending on traffic.

Is the road to Chefchaouen difficult?

The road has asphalt all the way, but it has many bends in the last part. Drive in the daytime and plan about two hours from Tangier.
